Tips to Keep You from Tossing and Turning

At least one in every three Americans has trouble getting to or falling asleep. So if you struggle to get to sleep you know that you’re not alone. The leading causes of lack of sleep are stress and a lack of physical activity. The biggest thing is finding where you’re lacking most, what’s really keeping you from sleeping well. If stress is the cause of your lack of sleep, you can try meditating, if it’s your diet you need to try limiting your sugar and junk food intake or getting a massage. If inactivity is the cause then you have just got to push yourself and get started working out.  Here are a few tips to keep you from tossing and turning and sleeping better;

  • 10-20 minutes of meditation

Meditation is probably the best way to override the nervous system and keep you calm and relaxed. It just helps you work out thoughts and settle your own mind over things with no distractions. You can look up videos and tutorials in regards to meditation to learn how exactly to do it. It’s different for everyone, but a nice quiet and peaceful location should do the trick.

  • Yoga

Yoga is not just an exercise to keep you fit and burn off extra energy, but it’s also a great way to relax. You can do it in the morning, middle of the day, or right before bed. Whatever works for you. The best yoga positions for relaxation are those that aren’t too strenious but still make you work a little for it.

  • Turn Screens Off

Did you know that watching TV or staring down at your phone just before you go to bed will make it harder for you to get to sleep? This is because the screen lighting stimulates your brain. The blue light emitted from phones, computers and televisions interrupt your body’s natural production of melatonin and give your brain too much stimulation, not allowing it to wind down. Turn off your screens at least 30 minues before you want to go to sleep.

  • Limit the caffeine, sugar and junk you are eating

What goes into your body is very important. Caffeine is one of those substances that can really affect your sleep patterns negativley. Even eating a snack right before bed can keep you up a little longer, with that added energy. Sugar is the last thing you want at night, unless you’re trying to stay up. Not to mention how bad it is for your body.
